Your outline can be such a vital part of your writing process. It organizes your ideas and focuses your research. You will be surprised at how much easier it is to write your paper from an outline than it is to write it from scratch.

  1. Start out by listing your title for your research paper. This should be listed at the top of the paper and possible in the center. You should also add any sub titles to the outline as well.
  2. The first section is the introduction and can use the Roman numeral one for a label. Within the introductory paragraph, you want to discuss the background information on you topic and the thesis. These will be denoted by “a” and “b”. You can list some general ideas that you want to discuss about the background of the topic to just remind yourself of what you want to talk about. You should also write your thesis completely out.
  3. There will be three body paragraphs each with their own Roman numeral and piece of evidence to prove the thesis. Use complete sentences to help yourself out in the future. Each body paragraph should include the proof and the reasoning behind the proof. Be sure to include at least two supporting reasons for each paragraph and justify them both.
  4. There should also be a conclusion that restates the thesis and the supporting pieces of evidence. Make your conclusion interesting and never just copy and paste your original thesis. The restatement should show more insight that the original thesis because now your reader has more information about it.

You should make sure to add transitional phrases that link the various ideas together. It will help you make sure that you work towards proving your thesis and not present ideas that are irrelevant. It can be very surprising how big of a difference an outline will make.
