The number of controversial health topics available is endless. These topics are in the news daily. We have epidemics, natural disasters, auto related casualties, infectious disease, and stress related ailments. Today we are considering several of these including:
First we’ll look at tobacco. Tobacco is generally ingested in its leaf form through smoking, chewing, sucking, or snuffing. It is so dangerous because of the addictive ingredient nicotine. Smoking and other means of ingesting tobacco have been known to cause cancer, lung disease, heart disease and a plethora of other ailments. Tobacco ingestion, however, remains a common worldwide practice. It kills approximately ½ of its users. Approximately 6 million people per year die from smoking. Second hand smoke takes a toll of nearly half of that. Steps must be taken if the rate of increase in usage is to be stopped in the coming years.
Smoking is a worldwide epidemic. It is a public health threat. It kills 1 person every 6 seconds and causes one in ten deaths. The incidence of smoking related illness and death is highest in low income and middle income countries. It causes higher costs in healthcare. Oftentimes, children in low income countries work in tobacco farms, which makes them vulnerable to ‘green tobacco sickness’ which occurs when nicotine is absorbed through the skin.
The death toll caused by smoking has increased but will rise exponentially in the years to come because of the gradual occurrence of smoking related diseases. One hundred million deaths occurred during the 20th century. One billion deaths are expected to occur due to smoking related ailments in the 21st century without intervention. This rate could increase to 8 million deaths due to smoking related causes in 2030.
Cigarettes have 4000 chemicals in them, 250 of which are harmful and 50 of which are cancer causing. Cigarettes are particularly conducive to causing cardiovascular and respiratory ailments in addition to many more. They can cause low birth rate and sudden death in infants.
Ageing is another area to look at. The over 60 population is an ever growing population. The prospect of a functioning and participatory senior population is encouraging. The senior population is predicted to double in 35 years. It will be important for the world’s society to adjust to and plan to accommodate this population. The occurrence of such a large senior population is unprecedented.
As stated, controversial health topics are numberless. These are just a few thought provoking topics.
