Writing Styles: How to Write an APA Research Paper

When finals role around, students have to buckle down and start working on their research papers. These papers require an extensive researching process, citations and certain style format. For many subjects, the style of choice is APA format. In order to get the best grade on the essay, students should make sure to use the following guide.

Overall Formatting Tips

Students should never place page breaks between the different sections of the paper. Likewise, parts of the paper like the abstract, title page and references should all be contained on their own pages. Unless the teacher specifies otherwise, the paper should use 12-point font and double spacing. Margins must be one-inch on the sides of the writing.

Creating the Title Page

In general, the title is around 10 to 12 words. Between the title, the student's name and the college's name, extra spaces should be avoided. The title page should be double spaced like the rest of the paper and the header should begin on this page. This header should use capital letters that use the title and the page number. The title should be on the left of the header while the page number should be on the right. Once this is done, the word program will automatically adjust the page number for subsequent pages.

Creating an Abstract

Before the paper begins, students generally have to include an abstract. Like the rest of the paper, the abstract should be double spaced. It should be in a block-style format and should not include more than 120 words. Within this paragraph, students should give an overview of the types of methods they used and results.

Beginning the Introduction

At the start of the paper, students need to write an introduction that includes the thesis and hooks the reader. When writing the introduction, students should consider possible anecdotes, quotations or questions that could get the reader interested. Generally, the thesis statement will also be included in the middle or end of the introduction.

Reviewing Citations

One of the most important parts of the research paper is accurately citing each work used. If the research is not listed in the bibliography or cited, it counts as plagiarism. While students perform they research, they should keep note cards that include all of the information about each source that they used. This will make it easier for the student to figure out where a particular quotation or statistic came from.
