Writing a research paper is a lot easier on you, the student, when you set yourself certain goals. All of this takes place before you start the research and the writing. The saying goes that if you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail. So rather than rushing in to begin writing your research paper, stop, take stock of the situation and list your goals. Here are a few possible specific goals.
Writing a research paper on a scientific topic requires a lot of focus. Attention, or focus, is also an important component to improving your writing skills. Everywhere you look there are hundreds of details begging for your attention. As such, a strong ability to divert your attention where it is needed the most can be truly beneficial. When you can enhance your focus you can not only pay more attention to a single task at hand--i.e. your paper--but better juggle three or four. When you look at something in your current environment your mind is creating a neural representation of it. Attention is like a control button that allows you to enhance the signal for something or turn it down. By enhancing your attention you can better focus on information or the research project you are trying to do. By improving your attention you can simultaneously improve your processing skills and sharpen your memory. By continually distributing your attention across a large visual field you can increase your focus. In our fast-paced environment you also need to enhance your ability to focus on one thing for an extended period of time.
With increased flexibility you are able to process information better. You can think faster and increase your reaction time. You will also be better equipped to respond to shifting priorities in everyday situations by increasing the speed of your cognitive processes. You will be better able to find words that are on the tip of your tongue and you will expand your language base while also being able to think outside of the box.
One of the best things to consider when you are expanding your writing ability, is that you are trying to teach people. Even if no one is listening and you are sitting at home writing a creative fiction piece for a publication, recounting the events of a recent sailing trip in an eBook, or writing a feature news piece your goal is to teach. The phrase, “sharing is caring” is absolutely applicable here, as it reflects upon the notion that sharing your experiences and knowledge through writing articles or eBooks is an effective means of showing that you care. You can help others to learn more by sharing what you know. In other words you are teaching them.
